Unsung Heroes of All-University Sing
While hundreds of performers take the spotlight each February (Sing) and October (Pigskin), another group of Baylor students works just out of view beneath the stage. For every kick line, costume change, dramatic finale, and standing ovation, the Sing Orchestra provides the musical heartbeat of the production. Their performances are never judged, their names rarely announced, yet every act depends on their artistry, preparation, and precision. Since generations of Baylor students first took the stage, the orchestra has helped transform seven-minute productions into unforgettable Broadway-style performances.
Most collegiate variety shows today use prerecorded tracks. Baylor's All-University Sing continues to feature live orchestral accompaniment, which is one of the traditions that distinguishes it from similar productions. Although Baylor's official Sing history focuses on the evolution of choreography and production values, the presence of live music has remained an important part of the show's identity.
Baylor has one of the nation's strongest collegiate music programs, including the Baylor Symphony Orchestra and numerous instrumental ensembles. Many Sing orchestra musicians have historically come from the School of Music.
The Orchestra's Challenge
Something that most audience members never realize...Every Sing act is essentially a Broadway medley. That means the orchestra may perform:
- Broadway
- Jazz
- Pop
- Country
- Rock
- Movie scores
- Latin music
- Classical
- And other styles...
...all in the span of one evening.
The musicians have to navigate constant tempo changes, key changes, style changes, and split-second transitions while following conductors. That's an impressive feat worthy of recognition.
